AN ACTIVITY club for the over-50s has more than doubled its members following an appeal in the Courier.
The Calderdale Community Coaching Trust’s group meets each week at the Shay stadium for indoor curling and other games.
Fax star Frank Watene, who runs it, said: “Last week we had six people, but we more than doubled it.
“We had people coming back who hadn’t attended for a while, plus another eight new members.
“It was the best-attended 50-plus event we’ve had.”
Funding for the club will run out soon, so it is hoped that with enough members it can become self-sufficient.
Frank said he hoped the newcomers would be back and even more people would come and have a go next week.
“They all seemed to really enjoy the indoor curling - so much so that if they do all come back I’m going to have to invest in another set,” he said.
“The competition that we did took up the entire two-hour slot.”
The club meets every Thursday from 2pm to 4pm at the stadium, on Shaw Hill, Halifax, and anyone over the age of 50 is welcome to attend.
Members also play Wii and board games and leaders say computer sessions could be organised if enough people are interested.
The Calderdale Community Coaching Trust is a charity that works in partnership with Halifax RLFC.
Together they aim to increase people’s participation in sport across the district.
