Comedy stars to have crowds in stitches

Funny bones are set to be tickled as Brighouse plays host to its first ever comedy festival.

The full programme, spanning eight fun filled days, has now been announced and it promises to be a laugh all the way for young and old.

Festival director Shane Gough said “We are very proud to bring you some of the finest comedy talent in Britain to Brighouse for the Festival. Maybe we will find the new stars of the future right here in our town at our open mic nights. Laughter, so we are told, is the best therapy around. So turn off the telly, leave the news and scandal, and let’s have a laugh for a week with friends and a drink, or two.”

The week kicks off with two open mic nights at the Millers Bar on September 28 at 8pm and the Lane Head Hotel the following day.

Moving around town, the Rastrick Bowling Club is the venue at 7pm for “A Taste of Edinburgh” on September 30, when the artists will be Fern Brady and Brennan Reece, two of the Edinburgh Fringes finest comics. The “Discount Comedy Checkout” opens at the Brighouse Sports Club on October 1 at 8pm.

The spotlight moves to The Holiday Inn, with a Big Comedy Night on Friday at 8pm, starring Anthony J Brown, Rivka Utley and Tom King and headline act, Smug Roberts.

Alun Cochrane comes to the hotel on Saturday night at 8pm. The comedian will be known to a many from his appearances on Mock of the Week and Have I got News for You.

Children have not been forgotten eithe with Central Methodist Church plays host on October 3 at 2pm to Gareth Richards and Steve Bugeja for a family show and on October 4 at 1pm, the children’s game show “Gunge! Gunge! Gunge!” will be held at the Waterfont Hotel.
