The Shibden Estate Company had submitted a planning application to Bradford Council calling for the the restoration of the Gatehouse at Upper Shibden Hall, off Halifax Road, on the border with Calderdale.

The scheme would have also involved an extension to the building, transforming it into a three bedroom house and increasing the size of the building by 50 per cent.

The development would also see a parking area for two cars created next to the building.

The application said the building “has been awaiting renovation for a number of years.

“The building is not Listed but as part of the original Upper Shibden Hall it does have historic interest and is worthy of being brought back into use.”Conversio

But planning officers at the Council pointed out that the building is on Green Belt land, and said the proposed extension would be “disproportionate” and “harmful” to the openness of the area.

They said the size of it would be beyond the “limited extension” normally allowed in the Green Belt. They added: “The result is considered to be an inappropriate development within the green belt which is by definition harmful.”
