TRADE unions were meeting today to decide their response to the budget proposals.
The gathering at North Bridge Leisure Centre was also considering a separate move by the council to slash redundancy pay by half, from a maximum of 104 weeks to 52.
Spokeswoman Sue McMahon described the situation as a "double whammy" for the council's 4,500 workers.
"Cuts in Government grants have been compounded by the council's budget proposals which will have a major effect on front-line services for vulnerable people.
"Our members will not take this lying down," she said.
More than 2,000 people have now signed a petition drawn up by 10 unions opposing cuts to council spending and compulsory redundancies.
They will be holding a march and rally at Halifax Piece Hall on Saturday, February 12.
