On Thursday (June 21) organisations in Calderdale will be holding a a counter demonstration outside Halifax Town Hall against Craig Whittaker MP and the Conservative and Unionist Group who will themselves be protesting against the Local Plan.

The Conservatives campaigned against the plan which, over the next 30 years, will provide thousands of new homes, during the local elections, calling it 'Labour's Mass Housing Plan'.

They announced that they would be holding a protest against the plan last week, starting at 5pm outside Halifax Town Hall, and invited residents who opposed the plan to join.

Left wing organisations will join together for the counter demonstration which wants to see more social housing created in the borough.

The organisations include Calderdale Momentum, Calderdale Peoples Assembly and Unite Community, the community branch of Unite the Union.

The demonstration will start a 5pm and some demonstrators will then attend the Council Meeting which starts at 6pm.

One of the organisers, Roger O'Doherty, said: “The Tories thought they could weaponise a plan to build thousands of much needed homes and win control of the Council. They lied and lied again about the content of the plan but failed. We want to see housing that meets need rather than feeds the greed of speculators and the council again becoming a major provider of Social Housing.”
