The would-be robbers claimed they had knives and would “stab” the milkmen.

The confrontation happened in Aysgarth Avenue, Smith House, Brighouse, at around 11.20pm on Monday.

The men were delivering milk in a plain white Peugeot van and police believe the raiders may have mistaken it for a parcel delivery van with high-value goods.

One of the robbers tried to get into the back of the van but the driver had already got back inside and the doors had automatically locked. The driver’s mate was already in the passenger seat.

The driver reversed back and one of the men struck the side of the van. The raiders fled empty-handed when the milkmen refused to get out of the van.

Armed officers in two vehicles were quickly on the scene and the area was searched.
