Burglar's £20,000 raid as family slept

A burglar from Halifax has been jailed for three years after more than £20,000 worth of property was stolen during a raid on a family home.

Geraint Hood, 21, and his 17-year-old accomplice broke into the house on Broomfield Avenue, Skircoat Green, last October.

While the family slept the duo loaded up the householder’s Fiat van with various items including bicycles, scooters, electrical goods and a Rolex watch.

Prosecutor Robet Galley said the van, which was fitted with a tracker device, was driven off.

But when the family discovered the break-in the next morning the van owner started making inquiries to locate his vehicle.

The Fiat was eventually found burnt out on waste ground.

But the householder’s own investigations helped the police to recover CCTV footage which showed Hood and the teenager going out in the early hours to commit the burglary.

Hood, of Brewery Street, Boothtown, denied being involved when he was questioned by police, but his alibi was later proved to be false and he eventually admitted the charges of house burglary and theft of the van at a court hearing last week.

His teenage accomplice, who cannot be named, was dealt with by the youth court last year and given an 18-month rehabilitation order with an intensive supervision package.
