Closing speeches heard in Brighouse fraud trial

A jury which has heard evidence about the lavish lifestyle of a Brighouse fraudster has started listening to the closing speeches in the case.

John Hirst, 61, of Millroyd Mill, Huddersfield Road, has accepted his involvement in a so-called Ponzi investment scheme which swindled millions of pounds from investors including ex-pats living in Mallorca.

Former accountant and financial advisor Richard Pollett, 70, from Dorset, has been on trial at Bradford Crown Court since June 21 after he denied being part of a conspiracy to defraud investors.

Hirst’s second wife Linda, 62, and her daughter Zoe Waite, 36, both from Surrey, have denied allegations of money-laundering along with Hirst’s solicitor son Daniel, 35, of Marsh Lane, Leeds.

Prosecutor Simon Bourne-Arton QC was yesterday (TUES) making his closing speech to the jury who will then hear addresses from the barristers representing each of the four defendants in the case.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC is expected to begin his summing up of the case later this week with the jury going out to begin their deliberations at the start of next week.
