Halifax gym has been forced to close due to fears for staff and customer safety.

It is believed the sudden closure is related to an incident in which a 33-year-old man was attacked with a bat after getting out of his car on Hopwood Lane, Halifax.

The attacker fled on foot leaving his victim, who was hospitalised, with serious injuries to the head and body.

The attack took place around 9pm on December 17.

Fitness First customers were initially told their gym was closed temporarily “due to unforeseen circumstances” from December 19-26.

The gym then sent a text message to customers thanking them for their patience while it sorted “maintenance issues”.

But customers were later told the gym would be closed “until further notice”.

Fitness First issued the following statement to the Courier: “The Halifax club has been temporarily closed for the safety of staff and members.

“We cannot comment on specifics of the investigation at this stage and we are assisting police with all inquiries.

“Fitness First shall not be collecting any further membership fees until this matter is resolved.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
