Former teacher back in court

A retired teacher accused of indecent assault on boys under the age of 14 has appeared at Calderdale Magistrates again.

Alan Birkby, 67, of Ryburn Buildings in Sowerby Bridge, faces trial at Bradford Crown Court on October 3 after denying the offences.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place between 1972 and 1981.

He will next appear at Calderdale Magistrates’ Court on August 2.

Ban for speeder

A businessman has been banned from driving for two months after totting up 14 penalty points.

Marcus Anthony Eden-Ellis, 50, of Knightsbridge Walk in Bradford, was caught doing 72mph on the M62 at J24 at Ainley Top.

Eden-Ellis was caught by a speed camera on January 9 this year as he travelled through a 50mph section of the road.

He admitted the charge at Calderdale Magistrates’ Court and was fined £400.

Two get court date

A man charged with assault by beating will appear in court on Monday.

Jake Briggs, 18 of Rochdale Road, Sowerby Bridge will appear at Calderdale Magistrates’ Court on Monday after a hearing on Tuesday was adjourned.

He will appear with co-accused, Gregory Yeadon, 18, of Ryburn Terrace, Pellon.

The alleged incident took place in Halifax town centre on June 23 this year.

Litter pick in Elland

More than 100 bags of litter were filled during a clean-up day in Elland.

Officers from the Lower Valley neighbourhood policing team joined forces with members of Elland and District Partnership, Elland Christian Group, Pennine Estate workers and Calderdale Council street cleansing and graffiti teams to help residents tidy the area.

Skips were left between Elizabeth Street, Frances Street and Whitwell Drive for people to fill and a litter pick was carried out.
