A FORMER Halifax primary school teacher has admitted sex offences dating back 40 years.

Alan Birkby, of Ryburn Buildings, Sowerby Bridge, formally entered guilty pleas to a series of allegations of indecent assault and indecency with a child.

His admissions came when he appeared before a judge at Bradford Crown Court this week.

The charges cover a period between January 1972 and January 1981 and involved a total of six boys then aged between seven and 11.

The 68-year-old was granted unconditional bail until his sentence hearing on May 4.

He will now have to register with the police as a sex offender.

In total, Birkby admitted nine allegations of indecent assault and three charges of indecency with a child.

Judge Colin Burn told Birkby that his case was being adjourned so that a report could be prepared by the probation service.

But he indicated that unless something very adverse to the defendant came to light, the inevitable prison sentence for the offences could be suspended.
