Halifax man racially harasses ex-partner

A man has been jailed for racially harassing his ex-partner.

Jay Carl Robertshaw of Redcar Street, Halifax, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment at Calderdale Magistrates Court.

The 44-year-old also pleaded guilty to failing to come to court without reasonable excuse after magistrates heard that he was originally due for sentence last month.

The court was told that on July 15 the defendant had turned up at the woman’s house and began shouting, accusing her of stealing his wallet and keys - despite her telling him that she didn’t have them. The defendant went on to continue to harass the female victim, ringing her up a total of 16 times following the accusations.

At one point she received a voicemail from him, threatening that “she better answer” stated the prosecution, before he carried on to shout a torrent of racial abuse down the phone.

Robertshaw was sentenced to 20 weeks in custody by magistrates who said his sentence would have been lighter had the crime not have been racially aggravated.
