Halifax MP condemns yob behaviour of youths who attacked police with fireworks on Bonfire Night

Holly Lynch, who accompanied firefighters on duty across Halifax on the night of November 5 to see the challenges they face, said it was "utterly unacceptable" that some people had used the date as an excuse to use fireworks as weapons and terrorise their neighbours.

As reported by the Courier, extra officers had to be drafted in after police were attacked by people throwing missiles and aiming fireworks at them in the Parkinson Lane area.

Police were initially called to reports of firework-related anti-social behaviour involving groups of youths, including fireworks being aimed at passing vehicles and fires being started.

District officers who attended the calls were targeted and extra police resources - including the police helicopter - had to be deployed.

Fireworks and other missiles were directed at officers and police vehicles. Police said "public order tactics" were used to disperse the youths.

Ms Lynch said: “The fire service, the police and Calderdale Council worked incredibly hard in the run up to Bonfire Night to provide advice and guidance on how to enjoy the weekend safely.

“I attended a number of calls with firefighters to check on organised bonfires, alongside more routine calls to domestic properties which don’t stop just because it’s Bonfire Night.

“After the last 18 months, it was great to see so many families able to enjoy Bonfire Night together.

“Whilst most people were enjoying Bonfire Night responsibly, to hear that some used the night as an excuse to use fireworks as weapons, terrorise their neighbours and attack the emergency services, is utterly unacceptable.

“The fact specialist police officers had to be brought into Halifax with air support from the police helicopter to deal with one particular group of youths is beyond disappointing.

“I know the police are working hard to identify those engaged in such appalling behaviour and are working with residents to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

“A big thank you once again to the police and fire service as well as Calderdale Council staff and the wardens who worked so hard to keep people safe over bonfire weekend.”

Shadow Home Office Minister Ms Lynch led the Protect the Protectors campaign which changed the law to offer more protections to all emergency service workers.
