A man accused of deliberately stabbing his girlfriend in the throat has been found not guilty by a jury of wounding her with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Michael Geraghty, 44, of Illingworth Road, Halifax, had always denied intending to harm his then partner Mandy Varin and said the injury to her throat had been an accident. The jury failed to reach a verdict on an alternative allegation of unlawful wounding, but the judge directed a verdict of not guilty for that lesser charge after being told that the Crown Prosecution Service would not be seeking a re-trial.
