Man stole yoghurt and cheese in drunken raid

A 53-year-old man has appeared at court after stealing yoghurt and cheese from Tesco.

Mark Wadsworth, of Brussells Court, Halifax, came away with £2.45 worth of goods from the Tesco store, on Market Street, Halifax.

The incident occurred on February 16, 2013, at 4pm, when Wadsworth was observed by the store detective entering the shop.

Calderdale Magistrates Court heard that he was in drink and approached the customer service desk asking where the trifles were kept.

Wadsworth went to the dairy aisle and picked out a yoghurt and some cheese and was seen putting them in his coat.

When he was stopped by the security staff and led through to the back of the store Wadsworth shouted expletives causing shock to customers in the store.

Wadsworth told police, in interview, that he didn’t remember anything as he was in drink but accepted that it must have happened.

He pleaded guilty to a theft and a public order offence of disorderly behaviour.

Maggie Cavanagh, mitigating, said: “This was a very low-value theft and the items were taken for his own consumption.”

Magistrates gave Wadsworth a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered that he pay £85 in costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
