New measures to tackle abuse in Calderdale

A new framework for tackling domestic abuse involving the council, West Yorkshire Police, Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group and Pennine Housing 2000 has been given the go-ahead by Calderdale Council’s Cabinet.

The decision comes following reports in the Courier in December that the council had been awarded a £335,000 to help with the fight against domestic violence across the borough.

Marcus Thompson (Con, Skircoat), Cabinet member for Communities, told the meeting: “I’m really pleased to see domestic abuse moving up the agenda in Calderdale.

“I think we can all sometimes shy away from some rather unpleasant truths that amongst ourselves, our neighbours and the neighbourhoods we live in, domestic abuse has gone on for too long.

“Perhaps because it happens behind closed doors we’ve perhaps not focused enough on it, so I’m really pleased to see that this is key issue now for the borough,” he said.

“The new strategic framework will help us to tackle domestic abuse, and help the council and its partners all work together effectively to reduce the harm caused by domestic abuse – whatever gender and whatever background.”
