The Department of Health says the Savile NHS Legacy Unit was being established following publication last month of reports laying bare the extent of the Leeds-born DJ’s abuse in hospitals.

A spokeswoman said there could be other cases involving the former Top of the Pops presenter and officials wanted victims to be able to come forward.

She said: “These will be properly and consistently investigated by the NHS to the same standard as has been followed to date.”

More details about the Savile legacy unit are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks by health officials.
