A North Yorkshire police officer has died while answering an emergency call last night.

The officer’s patrol car hit a tree in the village of West Tanfield near Ripon at about 7pm on Saturday night.

He was the sole occupant of the car and died at the scene.

Temporary Chief Constable Tim Madgwick said this morning: “This is terrible and tragic news and the thoughts of everyone at North Yorkshire Police are with the officer’s family at this sad and very difficult time. The officers immediate family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
