Officers out in force to stop poachers and riders

Police in Calderdale are warning illegal off road riders and poachers that officers will be out in force this spring.

As the breeding season for wildlife approaches, officers are warning how the misuse of illegal off road riding and other activities can threaten birds nesting and wildlife on the ground.

Special Constable Phillip Sanderson, Calderdale Divisional Wildlife Officer, said: “All birds are protected in the breeding season. That includes their nests and young. These sites in particular are monitored by volunteers and the mere disturbance is an offence and offenders will be prosecuted.

“Sheep are about to lamb and I would urge dog walkers to be careful when walking their dogs in the countryside. Ensure they are kept on a lead or close control when around livestock, and if at all possible to avoid them,

“Mammals, including bats and badgers, will also soon be producing young. Their breeding sites are all protected by law.”

“We are already receiving reports of birds of prey being found shot and killed.

“Keen walkers and ramblers are usually fully aware of their responsibilities in the countryside.
