Police divers searching canal in Brighouse as towpath is closed off

Police divers are searching a section of canal in Brighouse town centre.

The canal towpath outside Prego restaurant has been cordoned off as divers search the Calder and Hebble Navigation.

A number of police vehicles have been seen in Bethel Street car park.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed the search is in relation firearms discharge on Monday.

The search follows a shooting in Brighouse earlier in the week.

Detectives investigating a firearms discharge in Brighouse on Monday have made a further arrest.

At around 2.15pm (27/04), police received reports a firearm had been shot at a silver Qashqai car on Cliffe Road.

It is believed the suspects were driving a black Golf, which drove off from the scene.

There are no reports of any injuries.

The Qashqai has since been recovered by officers.

Enquiries remain ongoing by the Force’s Firearms Prevent Team.

Detective Inspector Sarah Burton said: “This incident will understandably cause concern in the local community and there are increased high visibility patrols in the area to offer reassurance.

“The discharge of any firearm is extremely serious and extensive enquiries are underway to find all of those responsible.

“Thankfully no one has been reported injured in this incident, however the consequences could have been much worse.

“I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with information to contact officers.

“I would also ask for anyone who witnessed either of the vehicles involved driving in the area or the black Golf leaving the area to contact police.”
