Police launch murder enquiry into death of pensioner after Huddersfield assault

The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are continuing to appeal for witnesses following the assault on the victim near to KFC on New Street in Huddersfield.

Officers were called to the scene at 11.12pm on Wednesday, May 14, after a man received serious head injuries in an alleged attack.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, where he died yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

Forensic enquiries have been ongoing at the scene and two men arrested in connection with the attack were re-arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson, from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “Tragically the 69-year-old man who was critically injured in this assault has now died in hospital.

“As a result the two local men aged 23 and 30 who were arrested in connection with the attack have now been further arrested on suspicion of murder. They remain in custody for questioning at this time.

He added: “A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of the victim’s death and we continue to appeal for witnesses. I would like to re-iterate that continued information from members of the public could prove absolutely vital to this investigation.”
