Police look to recruit community volunteers

Community-minded people who have some spare time on their hands are invited to make a difference and become a police volunteer.

West Yorkshire Police is currently recruiting community volunteers to help improve their area, while also gaining valuable experience.

Acting Sergeant Alex Langley, Specials Liaison Officer and Volunteer Co-ordinator at West Yorkshire Police, said: “It’s a two-way thing. They can gain good experience and we can show that we are working with the community by reducing crime and improving their quality of life. But we don’t want people who are just putting it on their CV. We want people who want to make a difference in the community.”

Acting Sergeant Langley said the police are looking for people interested in helping out at projects over the summer and going into the winter, such as the Halifax Police Station open day on August 16, as well as crime prevention initiatives and leaflet drops.

A recent volunteering “success story” is Ripponden resident Callum Gomes, who signed up to be a Police Support Volunteer in October 2013.

Having been involved in police operations, he has now applied to become a special police constable.

Acting Sergeant Langley said his experience as a volunteer has helped him along that path and will hopefully one day lead him to becoming a full-time police officer.
