Police plea after ‘child snatch’ bid

A Brighouse woman is warning parents to be vigilant after a man tried to grab her friend’s child in a park.

When she was on a trip to Greenhead Park in Huddersfield with friends and their children at the weekend, her friend’s daughter was approached by a stranger who tried to take her away.

However, the man was unsuccessful and fled the scene.

Inspector Jon Dunkerley, of Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Police were called to Greenhead Park, Huddersfield, shortly after 4.40pm on Saturday, May 17, following a report that a man had approached a number of children playing on scooters in the park area and attempted to take their scooters. In one of the incidents, the man has also grabbed hold of a girl’s arm.

“Extensive enquiries were carried out to try and locate the man; however it is believed he had left the area prior to police attendance.

“We take reports of this nature extremely seriously and are in the process of reviewing any CCTV opportunities within and around the park. Neighbourhood officers have been made aware of this report and the suspect description for consideration when patrolling the area. The man involved is described as a white man, aged in his 30s, with grey hair with a bald patch on the top and a goatee-style beard. He was wearing a grey top, grey jogging bottoms with a stripe down the side and a black jacket.

“Anyone who witnessed a man acting suspiciously in Greenhead Park or recognises the description is asked to call PC Caitlin Hampson in the Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.”
