Residents are being warned about a telephone scam currently running in Halifax.

Community protection charity The SAFER project has warned that a double glazing company is telephoning people claiming that under new Government regulations residents need a ‘EU energy efficiency certificate’ for their homes.

After arranging a home visit pressure is then put on householders to buy new windows and doors.

A spokesperson for The SAFER project said: “We have received a complaint regarding a scam in the Halifax area, however this is a telephone call so could affect you wherever you live.

“The caller states that the Government has changed its regulations regarding an energy efficiency ‘EU Certificate’ needed for your home. The caller states if you act now they can provide this for free, however if you wait you will have to pay. The caller then arranges a date and time to attend your home and discuss your options for energy efficiency.

“We believe this call is from a less than reputable double glazing company and would lead to pressure sales to buy new windows and doors.

“If you receive any calls of this nature please hang up!

“If you have any questions about energy efficiency you can contact the Energy Saving Trust on 0300 123 1234. Alternatively you can contact The Green Doctor on 0845 6051230”.

The SAFER project is a community protection and empowerment programme, working with older adults in Leeds and Bradford, funded by The Big Lottery and delivered by West Yorkshire Trading Standards. For more information, call 0113 3939808 / 0113 3939809.
