Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 24-year-old man was left fighting for his life following an assault in Ossett.

Officers were called to the Tawny Owl pub, Prospect Road, at around 12am this morning following reports of a disturbance.

A 20 and 23-year-old were arrested and remain in police custody.

Police are now urging any witnesses to come forward.

Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson, from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “The victim appears to have been struck to the side of his head and was knocked unconscious.

“He was subsequently taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he has undergone surgery for a serious head injury and remains in a critical condition this morning.

“CCTV from the premises has been seized as we continue to piece together the circumstances leading to the disturbance.

“This type of violence is rare in what is a friendly community and I would encourage anyone who either witnessed the disturbance or has any information that may assist the investigation to contact police as their evidence could be vital.”
