The firm hopes to build a new supermarket, car park and petrol filling station on Burnley Road opposite the bus station.

The plans will see the demolition of the former Abraham Ormerod Medical Centre and the former Olympia Cinema which used to be a Kwik Save store.

The proposals have been backed by officers at Calderdale Council, however a number of objections have been raised about the proposals.

There are concerns that the supermarket will have an adverse impact on shops in the town centre and divert trade away from the market.

Concerns have also been raised by local residents who say that they will lose access to on-street parking if plans are given the go-ahead.

Councillor Steve Sweeney (Lab, Todmorden) said that residents at Ridge Bank were concerned about overlooking the proposed filling station.

He said: “I support the building of the supermarket, but would rather it be built without the filling station.

“Residents are worried about the extra fumes.”

However, supporters say that the new supermarket will offer new jobs and help towards regenerating the town centre.

Adsa spokesman Peter Bartram, said: “We are delighted the Council are recommending our application for approval. The new Asda store and petrol station will generate up to 30 jobs in the local community and provide more choice for local shoppers.”
