End of era for Royal British Legion branch

Dwindling numbers and falling support has seen the Brighouse Royal British Legion branch disbanded.

The decision was taken by the 14 remaining members for the branch to close.

Gloria Bagley, West Yorkshire Royal British Legion’s membersip support officer, explained there was a special group meeting with the branch where only two members were able to attend.

“Members have voted for the closure of the branch. They have struggled for a number of years to get people to join and volunteer.

“You also have to look at that many members aren’t able to do as much as they used to due to their health and age.

“It is a very sad day because there has been a branch in Brighouse for many years.

“Its sad to see it close and the standard will be lowered and not be paraded any more.”

“On behalf of the Royal British Legion we would wish to thank both supermarkets for their support in allowing collections in - store and for counting and banking all donations and also the many volunteers including Brighouse Sixth Form College, Rotary, Inner Wheel, Ladies Circle and 41 Club.

“Finally many thanks for the generous donations made by the people of Brighouse and support from all local schools and businesses,” added Mr Woodward.
