A dog thought to have been thrown into the river in Hebden Bridge has been rescued by firefighters.

The water rescue team from Brighouse Fire Station were called out to Bridge Lanes, Hebble End, just before 7pm last night by the RSPCA.

They believe the female dog - a cross between a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a Rottweiler - had been thrown into the water.

They said luckily she had found an island to stand on and had been spotted.

The dog was very cold but was safely handed over to the RSPCA.

“It was a lovely dog,” said one of the firefighters.
