A student from Elland is planning for a career in a completely new field - as a football referee.
Arran Williams, 20, is currently studying business and financial services at Huddersfield University, but is also training as a referee and hopes to be officiating at a semi-professional level when he finishes his degree next year.
The former Brooksbank High School pupil has also been involved in coaching, including of Huddersfield Town Ladies, and is on course to notch up his 100th game as a referee later this year.
He already officiates in a number of competitions in West Yorkshire and also had a taste of working abroad when he joined the roster of referees for a summer tournament in Denmark.
He said: “I signed up for a refereeing course run by the West Riding County FA and the next thing I knew I was out there doing a game.
“It was certainly a different experience.
“Abuse from players and fans is part of the job. You get the odd one or two who are alright, but the odd nine or ten just scream and shout.”
