A HEAD teacher is spending her summer holidays hiking across two islands to help her school.

Pam Sellers, of Highbury Special School, Rastrick, will be trekking 16 miles across two islands of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland to raise funds for improvements and the refurbishment of the school’s hydrotherapy pool.

Her journey will start on the most southerly beach of the Isle of Vatersay and finish at the most northerly one on the Isle of Barra.

“I’ve had a strong desire to play my part to help raise some money for the school. I arrived here when the pool was being built and I wanted to help with the next phase of its life.

“The children get a lot out of the pool and I would be delighted if I managed to raise a couple of hundred pounds,” she said.

She is very familiar with the island having spent many holidays there and is hoping for favourable weather when she undertakes the walk mext month.

So far the school and the Friends of Highbury group, have raised around £120,000. However, another £130,000 is still required for the new development.

A third of the children at Highbury have complex conditions so they need specific equipment for the pool which has to be kept at a set temperature because the children do not move about as much.
