A PROJECT designed to build relationships between schools and families has been hailed a great success.

Abbey Park Primary School, Illingworth, Halifax, was the first in the region to take part in FAST (Families and Schools Together).

The Save the Children initiative was funded by Lloyds Banking Group.

And bank staff worked with the school on the eight-week project.

Twenty-eight families took part in the three-hour sessions held in school every Monday, which culminated in a “graduation” ceremony.

Parents and children enjoyed meals together, took part in activities and discussed issues with other parents and staff.

Deputy head Susan Barraclough said they learned about family values and built up a good community spirit.

She hoped the adults would now be willing to run a parent-link group with the school.

“It has been good and it’s something we would look to repeat in the future - the families have loved it,” she said.

Lloyds Banking Group will also be funding a trip for the families of those taking part to Knowsley Safari Park.
