A BUSY commuter route shut after a rock fall will re-open by 4pm, say Calderdale Council.

Part of the Elland bypass, between the Elland slip road and the junction with the M62, has been closed since last night after boulders fell on the side of the road.

Council engineers and contractors were called in to assess the area and make it safe.

The council says measures have been put in place to stop any more rocks falling onto the road and footpath.

These involve a rock trap which has been constructed in the highway verge to trap any more boulders which could fall. The footpath running behind the highway verge will also be diverted to protect pedestrians.

A diversion has been set up until 4pm. Drivers will need to leave the bypass at the Elland slip road and use the old Huddersfield Road. Signposts are in place. The bypass remains open for drivers coming from the motorway towards Halifax.
