The vision is to enhance the area to provide residents and visitors with improved access to outdoor recreation facilities, a new environmental learing centre, improved wildlife conservation and sustainable employment opportunities.

Proposals include construction of a network of walking and cycling trails; recreational facilities including geocaching, camping, canoeing; installation of a hydro-generating plant; employment space; training facilities and more.

Deputy leader of the council, Coun Scott Benton, said: “It is hoped more people will be introduced to the area. The nature reserve is an important site for wildlife and people are largely unaware of the importance of the site.”

Coun Benton hopes the site will attract visitors to the area and the development is “very exciting”.

The area could become Calderdale’s first official country park.

Councillor Ann McAllister (Rastrick, Con), said: “It will be a feather in Calderdale’s cap.”
