Calder Valley roadworks misery continues

ROADWORKS between Luddenden Foot and Mytholmroyd are still causing lengthy delays for drivers on the A646.

At peak times, it can take up to an hour for motorists to get though the traffic lights in the two villages.

It is less than a fortnight since contractors finished rebuilding a huge retaining wall beside the Rochdale Canal, at Luddenden Foot, and work began on redesigning the curbs and footpaths in the middle of Mytholmroyd.

That job is expected to continue for several weeks yet.

But new holes have been opened up in the road close to the Springfield Camping Centre in Luddenden Foot, further adding to the misery for commuters.

Peak time bus services from Halifax to Todmorden have been particularly badly affected by the delays.

The work in Mytholmroyd which began on February 11 involves widening and repaving the footways outside the memorial gardens.

“The resultant narrowing of the carriageway should also encourage lower speeds,” according to Calderdale Council.

Improvements will also be made to the junction of New Road with Burnley Road.

In order to complete the work on phase one as quickly as possible, contractors are working seven days a week where possible until the middle of April.

*The Orange Street dual carriageway in Halifax which was closed to inbound vehicles on January 9 will remain closed until March 18.

The outbound lanes approaching the roundabout are unaffected.

Closure is necessary at this point to enable the final stages of the Broad Street Plaza development, which includes building a new junction into the multi-storey car park from the roundabout, a new exit road from the car park across the existing dual carriageway, providing a new lay-by in Orange Street to service a new hotel.
