Calderdale Council asks residents to "stay strong and positive" during flood clean up

After two weekends of flooding, the Environmental Agency has removed all flood warnings in the area.

In a tweet, Calderdale Council said: "Following a tough week in Calderdale following #StormCiara, we're all relieved that we largely escaped #StormDennis. There is still lots of work to do here to support our communities but our thoughts go out to those areas that are currently affected. Stay strong and positive."

The Environmental Agency has removed all flood warnings in the area.

There are still flood alerts at 3 catchments - Lower River Calder, Middle River Aire, River Spen and Batley Beck.For further flood updates and advice on what to do during and after a flood, visit the Gov UK website.The Community Foundation for Calderdale has emergency grants available for those affected by the flooding. "We have had a fairly quiet night with all rivers rising close to, but not above their banks. All “high risk” areas have peaked with EA advising that the storm appears to be easing off and rainfall turning to light showers throughout Sunday.

"We have had a lot of surface water (which is still present in places) however this was tackled quite quickly by Highways and thankfully, no major road closures were needed. Old Lane, Dean Clough has a soft closure currently while the water is pumped out and the road made safe again.

"All in all, an unexpectedly steady night with a positive forecast for Sunday. Thanks to the Flood wardens who remained on duty and vigilant throughout the night, to Calderdale Council out and about cleaning drains and the emergency services and reservists who remained on standby all evening. We are very much hoping that Storm Dennis has done its worst," said Coun Archer-Patient.

Yesterday, 75 soldiers from the 4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, were deployed to support the Environment Agency's efforts in Calderdale.

70 reservists from the 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, were also sent to help.

Calderdale Council leader Tim Swift said: "This extra and expert resource couldn't be more welcome to support already exhausted communities and help us respond to further weather warnings across Calderdale."

During Storm Ciara last weekend, a month's rain fell in just 12 hours. Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd were the worst affected areas in Calderdale.

Over 200 properties in Mythomroyd were flooded, as the village's £35 million flood defence scheme was not due to be completed until the summer.
