Calderdale Council said lessons have been learnt from the other site reopenings and staff will be in place to support the strict safety measures in place on site.

It will also be necessary to employ traffic management due to the more complex access arrangements at these sites.

The move comes after thousands of people signed a petition to reopen the sites and was backed by ward councillors and the Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, Councillor Susan Press, said: “In recent weeks we have carefully monitored the situation at the HWRCs which have already opened, making sure they can operate safely without putting anyone at risk. Elland and Sowerby Bridge will therefore reopen on September 11 and all sites will continue to operate in line with the national and local guidance.

“These are challenging sites, both in terms of layout and their position and it will be necessary to have traffic management in place as well as strict safety measures. We ask people to be patient, particularly as we initially expect sites to be busy.”

All sites will continue to operate in line with the national and local guidance. This includes staff being unable to help people unload from their cars, so please only bring items that can be safely carried alone.

Before attending any of Calderdale’s HWRCs, residents are asked to read the full guidelines on site safety.

Visitors should also be aware that there may be short closure periods throughout the day for cleaning or skip exchanges. At busy times and close to closing time, cars may be turned away.

The Council has said people should not attend the HWRC if they self-isolating or are having COVID-19 symptoms.

If anyone in your household has had COVID-19 symptoms, then the waste should be double bagged and stored for 72 hours before being brought to site.
