End of the line for anglers breaching ban

Calderdale anglers are reminded that the coarse fish close season is currently in operation on rivers and other water bodies and they face a fine of up to £50,000 if they break it.

The warning comes after the Environment Agency fisheries enforcement officers caught 11 people breaking the law by fishing where they should not since the close season came into force.

The close season is from March 15 to June 15 2014, and as well as a fine anyone caught breaking the ban may be prosecuted. The ban includes rivers, streams, drains or waterways, but excludes canals.

Peter Mischenko, Environment Agency fisheries officer, said: “The river close season for coarse fishing is important. By preventing coarse fishing for three months, it allows the fish an uninterrupted spawning period. This increases the success of the spawning, in addition to providing wider environmental benefits.”

All anglers also need a valid Environment Agency rod licence.
