New glow in the dark ‘we’re watching you’ signs will tackle dog fouling at reservoirs across Calderdale.
The haunting posters feature a large pair of eyes which are visible after dark and use cutting-edge materials which charge up during the day to glow in the dark at night.
Yorkshire Water joined the campaign, spearheaded by national charity ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ last week, and will now display the posters at the Ryburn and Baitings reservoirs.
Research suggested that dog fouling tends to occur at night time and during the winter months, as some dog owners feel that they can’t be seen under the cover of darkness.
And as one of Yorkshire’s biggest landowners, Yorkshire Water is faced with paying over £15,000 a year to keep their paths, picnic sites and car parks clean of the dog mess.
Alastair Harvey, recreation advisor at Yorkshire Water said; “We know that the vast majority of dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dogs and dispose of the poo bags correctly, either in the nearest bin or by taking it home to dispose of in their own household bins.
“However, a minority of owners don’t so dog fouling on our land is a real issue that affects many people.
“We’re delighted to join this campaign to try and change the behaviour of that minority.”
“We welcome visitors to our land but we ask that everyone acts responsibly and with consideration to other users.
“We ask dog owners to pick up and bin responsibly any fouling by their dog and also keep dogs on leads.”
