The district’s pavements should be cleaned before thousands of visitors arrive for next year’s Tour de France, according to Coun John Ford.
He told the full council streets are littered with chewing gum and cigarette ends and in stark contrast to 10 years ago.
Coun Ford (Con, Elland) asked Council leader Tim Swift to ensure mechanical cleaning machines were deployed to tackle the mess and also asked that repairs to roads were completed with matching materials and not a cheap alternative.
“Let’s have a Clean Up Calderdale Campaign,” said Coun Ford.
Councillor Swift said recent spring cleans had been successful and they could be repeated but with budget cuts it would be dishonest to say they wouldn’t impact on services.
He added if people were more responsible money wouldn’t have to spent cleaning-up after them.
