MOTORISTS will have to pay 30p an hour or £1 a day to park at the bottom car park at Shibden Park from April.
But in the meantime it will be free because it is not cost-effective to collect the fees, Calderdale Council Cabinet was told.
Councillors agreed a year ago thaat parking charges were necessary at the Halifax attraction to increase income and contribute towards required savings. A temporary charge of £1 on weekdays and £2 at weekends was introduced and has been blamed partly for a fall in visitor numbers. It was suggested that a charge of 50p an hour could be levied, which would raise up to £73,000 a year but because of objections the new 30p charge was agreed this week by the cabinet.
Community services spokeswoman Coun Pauline Nash said nobody wanted to introduce charges but what was being proposed was “reasonable and workable.”
The 30p charge will come into effect when ticket machines are installed and a traffic regulation order is approved.
