Stay alert advice as Calderdale water levels rise with properties and roads 'expected to flood'

The flood siren has been sounded and warnings issued to expect flooding in the Walsden are.

Flood alerts also remain in other parts of the borough

Posting on social media Keith Crabtree, Todmorden Lead Flood Warden, said: "Not good news I am afraid as there has been a Flood Warning issued for the Walsden area of the Upper Calder Catchment area and the siren has or will be sounded.

"This is because they do not like to sound the siren too late so this is activated for the area only at the present moment and I shall be off up there shortly.

"It is expected that the rain will result in the river rising much higher than it is at the moment so please stay alert and get your flood defenses in place.

"It look like it is going to be a long night."

Calderdale Council wardens, staff, volunteers and emergency service continue to monitor the situation across the district.

A spokesperson for Calderdale Council said: "A flood warning has been issued by the Environment Agency for Walsden Water and the flood siren in Walsden is sounding.

"River levels across the Upper River Calder catchment have risen as a result of persistent rainfall and are now approaching levels where properties are expected to flood.

"Please act now and follow your flood plan. Turn off gas, water and electricity and move important items to safety.

"Take extra care and don't travel unless necessary. Our Highways teams are out monitoring river levels."
