Volunteer help wanted for cemetery scheme

On Saturday, August 30, between 10am and 2pm, staff will be having a clean up day in the cemetery. To help out with this, volunteers would be most welcome.

The cemetery is well looked after, but shrubs and weeds around the grounds seem to have had a growth spurt during the summer months, so some of the help required will involve weeding and pruning plants around memorials. Other jobs include litter picking and general tidying.

Brighouse Councillor Scott Benton said: “We regularly receive calls from residents in relation to the condition of the Cemetery. Although the Council’s Cemeteries Team try to maintain the site it is a huge challenge given its size. We have decided to organise a community clean-up day to bring together volunteers and Council workers so that we can go about addressing some of the concerns and maintenance issues that local residents have.”

Coun Ann Martin added: ““The Cemetery is a special place for many families from in and around Brighouse: I am really pleased that we are doing this and there is the opportunity for everyone to take part. “I know that many people spend quiet moments remembering their loved ones and I hope that we can ensure that Cemetery continues to be a place that is well cared for, and appreciated. I am sure that everyone would want to say thank you to everyone who helps on the day – and of course, all year round.”

Rubbish bags will be provided, along with some equipment, and the Council will help with the removal of anything collected.

Calderdale Council’s Head of Neighbourhoods, Andrew Pitts, said: “Keeping memorial grounds clean and tidy is very important to us. By organising this clean up day we are targeting our efforts to make sure Brighouse Cemetery looks its best.

“Although staff will be working hard on site, we’d really like the local community to help us out, so we can work more efficiently and make a real difference.
