Harry Mallinson, 22, from Greetland had promised his Grandma Pam, who is currently a patient at Overgate, that he would be first across the finish line on the 5km route at Savile Park.

Pam was waiting at the Hospice for Harry and five other members of his family to join her for a picnic in the Hospice grounds after the run.

Harry, who gave his medal to Pam, said: “I was thinking about grandma all the way around and I’d promised her I’d be first – so I was excited to tell her that I was.”

Sadly, Pam passed away at the Hospice on Monday.

Rebecca Ryan, Senior Events Fundraiser at Overgate, said; “Seeing Harry cross the line first and be presented with his medal by the nurses who are caring for his

Grandma was a really special moment.”

The event has already raised £20,000 for the Hospice, with sponsorship still coming in.

Sponsorship can be returned to the Hospice or any Overgate shop, or alternatively can be paid over the phone by calling 01422 387121.

The fundraising team at the Hospice are already planning the next event, which is the Midnight Walk. It takes place on Saturday, September 8. For more details visit http://mw.overgatehospice.org.uk/.
