Relatives of two brothers who lost their lives to drink and drugs have organised a second fund-raising walk in their memory.
Sam and Liam Jones, of Mytholmroyd, were both in their twenties when they died within two years of each other.
Their family set up the ‘We’re Not Walking Away’ event last year and decided to make it an annual fixture after it raised £3,739.34 for a substance-misuse charity.
Their sister Belinda Jones said: “It was such a success last year and I’m lucky enough to be able to see how some of the money was spent, so I thought it would be good to do it again.
“These events are hugely important in promoting awareness of drug and alcohol misuse.
“Last year the money raised went to the families of substance abusers in Calderdale, which will happen again this year.
“But it will also go towards paying for substance abusers to play football, box and street dancing, to take up their time in an evening.”
The five-mile walk takes place from 11am on Saturday. The route starts at Burnley Road playing fields in Mytholmroyd and finishes at Salem Community Centre, Hebden Bridge.
Cash raised will go to Branching Out, a local arm of the national Lifeline project, to highlight the support services available in Calderdale.
The route is family-friendly and suitable for people with prams and wheelchair users.
Lifeline and Positive Futures will also be there on the day with information and advice for anyone who wants an informal chat. Kate Hetherington, team leader at Lifeline, said: “Events like this are very important because we need to raise awareness of the support that’s out there for young people and families.
“If young people are suffering with drug or alcohol misuse there are people who can support them and they’re not on their own.”
Under-16s walk for free and there is an £8 registration fee for adults.
Tickets and sponsorship forms are available from Holt’s Greengrocers, Hebden Bridge, and Hebden Bridge Boxing Club in Central Street. Alternatively people can register on the day by arriving at 10.30am.
