Fifth death in six days on the M62 after motorcyclist dies near Brighouse

The death of a motorcyclist near to Brighouse has seen the number of deaths on the M62 rise to five in less than a week.

A biker aged in his 70s died following a crash near a slip road leading onto the M62.

The man’s bike was in collision with a Volvo V40 car on the A644 Wakefield Road, close to the eastbound entry slip road at junction 25 of the M62.

West Yorkshire Police said the collision happened on a roundabout at about 11.45am on Thursday.

Two days earlier a man died after a lorry crashed through a central reservation of the M62 between junction 36 and 27 near Goole.

Officers said that a heavy goods vehicle, loaded with a static caravan, was travelling westbound but went through the central reservation and collided with a black Lexus that was being driven eastbound.

Emergency services attended and the Lexus driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger of the car suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver of the lorry suffered injuries that are thought to be serious but not life threatening.

In the early hours of April 2, two men were killed after police officers received a report of a vehicle driving the wrong way down the M62; travelling eastbound on the westbound carriageway at junction 26.

Further calls to police reported a collision on the carriageway – officers attended and located two vehicles on the motorway.

The vehicles involved were a white Skoda Octavia and a black Vauxhall Insignia.

Two males, aged 34 and 27, were found deceased in the white vehicle.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene for causing death by dangerous driving and has been released pending further enquiries.

Another motorcyclist was killed on the motorway near to Ripponden on March 31.

The crash involved a blue Nissan Qashqai and a silver Aprilia motorcycle and occurred close to the exit slip road at Junction 22, at about 11.25am.

The rider, a 36-year-old man from Preston, was seriously injured and sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The Qashqai driver was been spoken to by officers.
