Ten pumps and two aerial appliances were called to deal with the fire on Waterloo Lane, in Bramley.
The blaze is believed to have started at around 8.45pm on bank holiday Monday.
Crews from Stanningley, Leeds, Cookridge, Killingbeck, Bradford, Fairweather Green and specialist officers from around the brigade were called to the incident.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and no injuries have been reported.
Detective Inspector Phil Jackson, of Leeds District CID, said: “At this time the safety of all those involved is paramount.
“We’re working with partners to minimise disruption and I would like to thank local residents for their co-operation.”
Plumes of smoke could be seen across the city and from the M62 motorway.
A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “Due to a large building fire ongoing at Waterloo Lane, Bramley, please be aware, if you live in the New Farnley, Churwell or Gildersome and surrounding areas, please keep your doors and windows closed due to large amounts of smoke in the atmosphere at the moment.”
