Firebugs strike yet again at Pellon playground

VANDALS have again torched a community play area.

Organisers in charge of Pellon Recreation Ground off Stretchgate Lane in Halifax say the latest arson attack on play equipment is the second or third in just six months.

“It’s disappointing,” said Tony King, ward co-ordinator for the Ovenden and Mixenden Initiative. “It’s mindless damage.”

The Courier reported in July how a tyre swing at the same site was destroyed by a fire. The heat of the blaze also damaged the chains, main frame and surface below.

Now more play equipment has been damaged by fire.

The recreation ground was transformed last year as part of a £50,000 makeover, secured after months of work by residents.

Before the project, the land had been littered with battered and broken play equipment.

The most recent damage happened some time between Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8.

Mr King said they were asking residents to become friends of the recreation ground and keep an eye on it for them.

They are hoping to launch further improvements to the recreation ground over the coming weeks, including planting new trees and installing play equipment for younger children.

Anyone with information about the damage at the recreation ground should call Halifax north and east neighbourhood policing team via 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
