A FIRE that damaged a carpet firm’s stock, phone line and even the plumbing could cost the business thousands.
Crews from Brighouse and Odsal fire stations were alerted to the blaze at Waddington Carpets in Bradford Road, Bailiff Bridge, just before 5am on Saturday.
They found cardboard tubes, used to wrap round carpets, alight and spent two hours at the scene.
Although the flames did not spread inside the building, they burnt out the phone line and piping and damaged doors at the back of the building.
And the smoke from the blaze has damaged carpets inside, as well as flooring.
Manager Victoria Roebuck said: “It’s going to cost us a lot of money. Even just the doors – they’re going to cost a lot to replace. Then there’s all the stock.
“Nothing like this has even happened to us before.”
She said the store had undergone a refurbishment that had included new floors but these had been damaged by the fire.
“We weren’t able to open on Saturday and had to cancel several fittings,” she said.
“We’re hoping to be open again as soon as possible and do our best to work round everyone.”
The cause is under investigation by police and fire investigators.
l A man was arrested on suspicion of attacking one of the firefighters trying to put the fire out. He has been charged with assault and was due to appear before Calderdale magistrates today.
