Flood fundraising efforts are still going strong

Five weeks on and fundraising events are still being held across the borough to help the victims of the Boxing Day floods.

The Duke of Wellington pub, Halifax, did their bit last Saturday morning to pile on some pounds.

On the day, DJs played and visitors could pay a pound to gunge a member of staff of their choice. The British Legion also attended and set up a raffle.

A Minion-themed breakfast was also put on for children, followed by a colouring-in session and the opportunity to meet the Minions themselves.

Tom Ryan, general manager said “It went a million times better than I ever imagined”, and there is no doubt about that with them smashing their target of £250 and actually raising £1,501!

On Sunday, a Floodlight Workout was held at Asquith Bottom Mills, Sowerby Bridge.

Deputy Mayor Ferman Ali and consort Shaheen Ali attended the event which was organised by Melanie Chapman.

The event included a ‘Route 66 Cycle’, where the equivalent miles from Sowerby Bridge to Todmorden to Brighouse were cycled throughout the day.

Lucinda Atkinson said: “We had a fantastic turnout.” The event raised a total of £1,600, which will be matched by the flood appeal fund.

The Barge and Barrel pub also held a fundraising event on Sunday.

The Elland pub was hard hit by the floods with them losing out on business following the collapse of Elland Bridge.

Tacey Firth, Barge and Barrel manager, said, “The event was very well attended, with great music by Friendly Brass Band.”

Craig Lawrance, Friendly Brass Band chairman, said “We would like to thank all the businesses who donated items as we could not have done it without their generosity.”

The end figure raised is £620 which will be matched by the Government through the Flood Appeal Fund.

New Elland-based business Fascinate and Bling, Victoria Road, took part in a ‘pop-up’ shop to raise money for the flood appeal.

Owners Beryl and Hayley said they donated 10 per cent of their takings on the night to the flood appeal.
