Flood warnings issued as storm Desmond batters UK

Flood warnings have been issued as high winds and heavy rain batter the country.

The Environment Agency has made more than 90 flood warnings, 17 classed as “severe”, which means flooding could endanger life.

Parts of the rivers Spen, Aire and Calder are among 72 areas covered by less serious flood alerts, as storm Desmond brings severe gales to the UK.

The Met Office has also issued a weather warning, saying driving conditions will be difficult and trees could be brought down.

Northern Rail said some trains would be running with 40mph speed restrictions after a severe weather warning was issued.
